The argument for a measured response to a crazy act

I agree with much of what the Dallas News staff writer has to say about the events of and reactions to last Saturday’s shooting in Arizona of a US Representative and others. He says it much better than I could have so I’ll just let give you brief excerpt and the link so you read Mr. Weiss for yourself.

Every infection is not an epidemic. And an act of crazed violence should not necessarily be treated as if it required a retooling of American society.

There’s still much to learn about the terrible events in Arizona that left U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 13 others wounded and Arizona’s Chief U.S. District Judge John M. Roll and five others dead. But too many have been too quick to assign possible blame.

Of course there is too much verbal violence in our politics, and there are too many wounded and killed by gunfire on our streets. But I don’t want to calibrate our culture by the actions of one unbalanced gunman.
